amazing how one person's writing can make you cringe in a good way and another can illicite the same reaction in a bad way.

from louise l. hay's daily affirmations, "i feel beautiful inside and out today. i project a happy, healthy glow that makes me a joy to be around. i look in the mirror and exclaim, 'i love me!'" ugh. the fact that this is from an "i can do it!" calendar is questionable enough...

then, from c.s. lewis's mere christianity, "a world of nice people, content in their own niceness, looking no further, turned away from God, would be just as desperately in need of salvation as a miserable world--and might even be more difficult to save." hard, but good.

of course, it's not fair to compare hay to lewis. i mean, how many could stand against him? but still. there should be some level out there.

  1. i agree. basically everything lewis writes makes me "cringe in a good way". i can read mere christianity over & over & it never gets old. not sure i could do the same with hay. i love this passage particularly. it might be time to completely re-read the whole book.

  2. i agree. anytime i refer to mere christianity or hear someone else reference it, i want to immediately read it all over again.
